FALL 2003

FALL BEAUTY WITH MUMS
Every year, we add new mums to our amazing selection of over 35  varieties.  We have mums in nearly every color of the rainbow and in every size - designed to fit your needs:  4" pots for table centerpieces, 9" pots for outside decorating, giant 14" pots and even hanging baskets!  This year, we've added 6 new "ladies" to the group.  Look for these new gals this fall at Ashcombe!

Rosy Denise:  red-bronze - season extender
Foxy Patricia:  brick red - early
Madeline:  lavender quill - season-extender
Yellow Blizzard:  yellow daisy - season-extender
Mariah:  orange quill daisy - season-extender
Bold Melissa:  lavender - season-extender

PLANTING
Garden mums need fertile, well-drained soil with adequate moisture and a minimum of a half day of sun.  Space plants 15 to 20 inches apart, depending on the size of the plant (and as deep as originally planted).  When removing the plant from the pot, loosen the roots slightly to help them get established.  Water well right after planting and continue to water as needed to prevent wilting.  Do not fertilize blooming plants as growth is complete.

OVER-WINTERING
Since winter hardiness varies considerably with different varieties, there are several suggestions to help mums over winter.
1.  Plant early so roots get established.  Roots will grow until the ground freezes.
2.  Do not cut back after blooming.  Cut back only after you see new growth in the spring.
3.  Mulch after the ground begins to freeze.  Use either evergreen branches, hay, straw or leaves.  This will help to keep the ground frozen int the event of a mid-winter thaw.

OTHER FALL FAVORITES
It's also time to plant cabbage, kale, pansies and violas.  Pansies, when planted in the fall, will come back next spring and color your garden longer than any other annual.

WHAT'S NEW IN GOURMET?

The answer is A LOT!
Recently, we attended the New York Gourmet Show where we found some lines of new, tasty products.  Here are a few of our favorites:

Elana's Italian line of chip dipping salsa is exceptionally good.  They also have a savory chilled soup called Roman Gazpacho; an elegant, stackable line of vinegars and oils; pasta sauces in a rich blend of herbs, tomatoes, fresh garlic and olive oil.

Just Off Melrose is a new company that makes a produce called, 'Just Crisps'.  They have no preservatives, sugar or artificial flavoring.  These are perfect for snacks and appetizers with four flavors:  white cheddar, parmesan, four cheese & olive and Italian cheese and herb.

Lotus Chips is yet another appetizer-snack chip that has the perfect crunch and flavor.  This sesame chip is great alone and fantastic served with cocktails, soups and salads.  Cinnamon sugar is a great choice to serve with ice cream and coffee!

FALL IS FOR ENJOYING!

Fall is just an incredible time of the year!  Great temperatures for enjoying the outdoors and planting new trees, shrubs, perennials, mums, pansies, cabbage and kale.  it's also one of the most popular times to decorate inside and out in recognition of the change of seasons.  Ashcombe has all the traditional favorites for decorating:  gourds, hay bales, corn chocks, Indian corn, ribbons, silk and dried flowers, wreaths and arrangements, fall candles and candle rings, linens, scarecrows, lawn ornaments, flags and more.

Enjoy the smells of autumn with room sprays, potpourri and candles in harvest scents.

For the cook, Ashcombe boasts a large variety of pumpkin and squash varieties and ideas for how to use them.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

In the times of our slow economy and when interest rates on investments are at an all time low, one of the best ways to keep y6our primary investment valuable (your home and landscape), is to fix up your grounds and property.  Records indicate that well-landscaped and planted properties bring better prices than ones that aren't.  Not only does your value improve, so does your morale as you enjoy the beauty of nature and a well-groomed home.  Fall is an excellent time to plant nursery stock and perennials that will live for years and bring enjoyment to your entire family.  Check out the quality of Ashcombe plants this fall.  I personally guarantee that you will be pleased.--Glenn M.
