NEW ANNUALS

Every year growers nationwide attempt to create new and improved plant varieties.  Plants with better weather tolerance, disease resistance,
color and growing ease are some of the qualities to improve upon.  At Ashcombe we strive to offer these advancements to our customers.
Look for these exciting new additions this year.

               2003 All-American Selection Winners:

'PURPLE MAJESTY' ORNAMENTAL MILLET:  This novel plant commands attention in any container or landscape due to it's stature.
From three to five feet tall when mature, these purple-leaved plants resemble corn stalks and are easy to grow in almost any warm soil.

'JAIO DARK RED' VINCA:  The "best red vinca yet" has velvety deep red 2 inch blooms with white centers.  Hot, humid and dry conditions
are no match for Jaio Dark Red.

'MERLIN BLUE MORN' PETUNIA:  This is the only petunia bloom with a pure white center changing to dark blue on the edge making it
               highly visible from a distance!

'BLUE WAVE' PETUNIA:  A welcome addition to the Wave family, Blue Wave is covered with velvety blue blooms.  Excellent for gardens,
               pots and baskets.

'SUMMER WAVE AMETHYST' TORENIA:  Fast growing, trailing plant with snapdragon-like flowers.

NEW VEGETABLES

Vegetable gardening is probably the most rewarding type of gardening there is.  Growing your own fruits and vegetables saves money,
ensures quality and provides satisfaction.  The following are some new additions to our list.

               ìPapaya Pearî Summer Squash -
The plant is very early to harvest, about 42 days from sowing seed.  Gardeners can be assured of a consistent high yield for the growing
               season.

               ìAngelî Honeydew -
Mediterranean-type melon with two superior qualities:  early harvest and flavor.

               ìHealth-Kickî Tomato -
This tomato contains 50% more of the antioxidant lycopene.  The flavor is great!  The yield is very heavy.

ìGrapetteî Tomato - Thin-skinned and juicy with a distinctive flavor and inviting shape.

ìFloralinaî Tomato - Very disease resistant.  Floralina produces beautiful large, firm fruit that are perfect.

NEW IN OUR NURSERY

Camellia 'Winter Star' is a hardier camellia that gives Zone 6 gardeners a chance to add some 'southern charm' to their landscapes.  Pink
October-November flowers bloom for up to 6 weeks on this 7 foot evergreen shrub.  Plant in a shady, protected site.  Camellia will be in our
nursery department in April or May.

Pieris 'Snowdrift' is an exciting disease resistant Japanese andromeda that grows to 4' and has lovely upright spikes of white bell-like flowers
in the early spring.  This compact evergreen cutie will grow beautifully in a sunny or semi-shady location.  Look for Snowdrift and 11 other
Pieris varieties in our nursery department this April.

Picea 'Buttercup' is a compact, 5-6' cone-shaped conifer with bright, butter yellow needles.  Wow, what an unusual accent plant for sun or
very light shade in a rock garden, container or mixed border.  Available April or May 2003.

Buddleia 'Guinevere' is a great new Butterfly Bush with luscious black purple flowers that out-shines all those 'that have gone before.'
               Available in June 2003!

Lagerstroemia 'Dynamite' is the first 'True Red' hardy Crape Myrtle we've seen.  This disease resistant woody grows 8-12 feet tall and loves
a hot, sunny spot.  You'll love the pumpkin-red fall color!  Available in July 2003!

ENDLESS SUMMER IS COMING

FINALLY!  A truly hardy mophead hydrangea that will bloom reliably each summer with showy pink or blue flowers!  'Endless Summer' is
the only hydrangea macrophylla that blooms on both new and old wood and is hardy to Zone 4
(-30°F).  This beauty grows 3-5' wide and tall, making it an excellent choice for foundations, specimen and mixed borders.  'Endless
Summer' will not 'officially' arrive in the marketplace until spring 2004, but we'll be lucky enough to get a sneak preview!  Look for 'Endless
Summer' in our nursery department about July 15th - or reserve yours now by calling 766-7611 (extension #216!)

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Optimism is defined as a disposition to hope for the best.  Gardeners are some of the best optimists I know of.  Despite two seasons of
drought and record heat last summer, gardeners continued to come into our nursery to keep their properties looking nice.  We all learned to
conserve water and which plants tolerated extremes better than others.  With this knowledge, 2003 should be a good season for all of us.
Here at Ashcombe, we are applying the lessons we learned and hoping for good results.  New varieties will abound in all plant departments,
and in our mixed containers and hanging baskets we will again be using Soil Moist to retain moisture.  Ten thousand pansy plants were
planted in our gardens this past fall as well as tulips so color should be very pronounced in April and May of this year.

We invite you to enjoy our store and gardens all year long.  It is an ideal place for you to see plants growing other than in pots and paks.
During Spring Open House, our theme will be 'Peace and Tranquility In Your Backyard.'  This is exactly the experience you will have while
visiting us this spring and growing plants of your own.  You can never be too optimistic!
