June & July have
been about as hot months as we have seen in a number of years in Central
PA. Many plants have been suffering as a result of the intense heat.
If it seems discouraging to you remember that some plants are more adaptable
to these extremes than others. Here are a few good selections for the
hot weather of plants still available to plant. Sun
Annuals: Vinca, They are flourishing in the Ashcombe
gardens at this time. Shade
Annuals:
Impatiens,
and Coleus. Perennials
for a Summer in the sun: Hibiscus,
Rudbeckia, Garden Phlox, Day Lilies, Heliopsis, Sedums and Grasses. Shade
Perennials: Hosta,
Helleborus, Anemone. Nursery Stock:
Junipers, Potentilla. Crape myrtle, Butterfly Bush, Weigelia, Summer
Sweet(Clethra), Rose of Sharon, all love the heat. The rewards of gardening
are many, beauty for the eye, stimulation for the body, and a sense
of peace in these turbulent times of ours. From Glenn Gross |
